Signs all over the bar area says no one under 16 allowed in the bar. Technology could be great but in this case too frustrating, too slow, and too time consuming. After giving our dinner orders the server came back and told us they were out of about 4 things we ordered and we had to start all over again. Why can’t you just write it down first to be quick and then punch it in a testy iPad later? It is torture to be wanting a drink and you’re at the mercy of a server standing there complaining about how to work an iPad. A table of 5 people took us 17 minutes to give our drink and dinner order because of the iPad “rules.” It was a downer for sure. You cannot be talking to friends at a table and then have more friends come in and sit at the bar you are told bar or table but you can’t mingle because “it messes them up.” Servers have to take your table orders on an iPad and it’s by the far the most time consuming thing ever. You never know who to ask for something and when someone asks you if you need anything you have to explain your situation to them from the beginning taking up more time than if you just had one designated server. I know it’s designed so that everyone is waiting on you but that makes it. Lots of room, very relaxing, the outside area alone is amazing but there is just something always off. He joins me today to talk about Windecker, the FBI’s infiltration, and his podcast, Alphabet Boys. Trevor now has a new 10-episode podcast called Alphabet Boys from Western Sound and iHeart podcasts. I previously had him on Deconstructed to talk about his incredible podcast American ISIS, which followed an American radical who traveled to Syria to fight with the terror group. His story and the way he was able to infiltrate the movement as an FBI informant, and how he was then able to push it in a more aggressive direction, is absolutely wild.Īaronson is an investigative journalist who covers federal law enforcement, and he has been looking into the inner workings of the FBI’s response to the 2020 racial justice movement. Windecker - or Mickey, as they called him - was an FBI informant, feeding information to the Bureau. He was able to make his way into the activists’ inner circle and eventually began helping organize protests, and he attempted to involve some of the activists in criminal activity, like a plot to assassinate the state attorney general. Windecker looked like a biker, a 40-something-year-old white guy who smoked cigars and drove a silver hearse. In Denver, during the height of the protests, a man named Michael Adam Windecker II grew close to racial justice activists. Now, thanks to new reporting by my colleague, Trevor Aaronson, we now have an answer in at least one city - and the answer is yes. But there was always this nagging question behind each provocation: Was that organic? Or were provocateurs involved? Was that guy really a Fed? RG: The protests sometimes turned violent with the escalation sometimes driven by protesters, and other times driven by law enforcement. Now, back in 2020, protests erupted in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. That evolved in the 1960s into the infamous COINTELPRO, which infiltrated and worked to undermine civil rights organizations. Edgar Hoover considered to be remotely sympathetic to communism - which essentially meant anybody to the left of the John Birch Society. So most of you know by now that one of the primary functions of the early FBI was to surveil and infiltrate any organization that J. Ryan Grim : I’m Ryan Grim and welcome to Deconstructed. Aaronson is the host of the new podcast “Alphabet Boys,” which chronicles the story of Windecker’s infiltration of the movement. Aaronson and Grim discuss the FBI’s approach to the racial justice uprising in 2020, the FBI’s infiltration of Black activist groups, and how the FBI’s use of informants may create crime rather than prevent it. This week on Deconstructed, investigative reporter and Intercept contributor Trevor Aaronson joins host Ryan Grim to discuss Windecker’s story. But Windecker was not an activist he was a fed. He also attempted to involve some of the activists in criminal activity, like a plot to assassinate the state attorney general. The Washington field office had to ask FBI headquarters “to do a poll or put out something to people saying w any CHSs involved,” he said, so they could get a handle on the scale of the FBI’s spying operations at the Capitol that day. 6, 2021, that it lost track of the number and had to perform a later audit to determine exactly how many “Confidential Human Sources” run by different FBI field offices were present that day, a former assistant director of the bureau has told lawmakers.Īt least one informant was communicating with his FBI handler as he entered the Capitol, according to Steven D’Antuono, formerly in charge of the bureau’s Washington field office.ĭ’Antuono has testified behind closed doors to the House Judiciary Committee that his office was aware before the riot that some of their informants would attend a “Stop the Steal” rally thrown by former President Donald Trump, but he only learned after the fact that informants run by other field offices also were present, along with others who had participated of their own accord. The league and the players union will be negotiating how to factor the heavy losses into the salary cap.īut the NBA’s most significant metric from the bubble is zero - as in zero positive COVID-19 tests or any disruption of play while at Disney. The losses offset by the bubble do not include any specific team losses, which will be significant as well. Expect a major decline, given that 40% of total league revenue comes from its gate. For the Finals, the NBA unveiled a new court design that for the first time put the logo of Finals presenting partner YouTube TV at center court while also placing Walt Disney World script on each side of the court. Other sponsor contracts were fulfilled by virtual signage during TV broadcasts and hard signage around Disney courts. Much of the teams’ and league sponsorship contractual obligations were also fulfilled at Disney by the addition of virtual ads and other activations, notably the Michelob Ultra Courtside Club that drew 60,000 virtual fans who logged into the fan wall during the 172 games played at Disney. 1 priority was health and safety and from a business standpoint, it was important that we would finish the 2019-2020 season, crown a champion and be able to include our business and media partners and develop a plan to bring our fans courtside,” said Kelly Flatow, NBA executive vice president, event management, who played a key role in planning and operating the restart at Disney. The bubble’s economics are critical in stemming significant losses brought on by the three-month pandemic shutdown and the league’s China controversy that kept the NBA off CCTV for months. The NBA spent $180 million to operate 100 days of basketball in its Disney bubble, but the steep investment allowed the league to stop the loss of $1.5 billion in projected revenue.Īccording to sources familiar with the league’s finances, the Disney restart allowed the NBA to stem the loss of about $1.5 billion in expected revenue, the bulk of the money tied to national and local television revenue followed by league sponsorships. One move by the league to give sponsors exposure included putting the logo of Finals presenting partner YouTube TV at center court.

As a product Hardlex is incredibly similar to Sapphire crystal, it is just slightly less resistant to scratches. The case itself measures in at 36mm, making this the ideal watch for people that do not like larger options that are readily available on the market, or for people who have smaller wrists. Most of the watch has a flat appearance, adding to the simplistic design. The actual hands of the timepiece are sword-shaped, and along with the Seiko 5 logo they are the only features on the watch that actually have any depth. Each of the individual markers is packed with lume, making it incredibly easy to see the five minute increments and read the watch in dimly lit spaces. Which means most of them are likely to try a combination of two things over the next few years: Raising prices again (as AT&T has already said it intends to do), and/or cutting some of the programming they currently offer and replacing it with cheaper stuff - perhaps from new digital players. But it’s very likely that all of the companies selling “virtual” TV subscription packages are still losing money on every subscriber, even at their new rates. The price of Hulu rises as you choose a better premium Hulu package and can reach CA20.40 (US14.99) per month. The price hike for Hulu’s live TV subscription service follows price hikes from competitors including YouTube TV and AT&T’s DirecTV Now, which both jumped by $5 a month last year. The Hulu subscription in Canada with ads will cost CA10.87 (US7.99) monthly. But when it does, a preemptive price cut may help Hulu customers feel better about what they’re getting. It’s a challenging movie, but a great one. Not coincidentally, both companies are launching their own streaming services and will ultimately want to take the shows they license to Hulu and bundle them into their own offerings. Jude Law, Clive Owen, Natalie Portman and Julia Roberts play a full range of ruthlessness, cruelty, sensitivity and brokenness. AT&T has already said it intends to sell its stake in Hulu, and Comcast is almost certain to do the same. Hulu’s roster of shows is very likely to shrink in the coming years. One good reason for that is that while they have to acknowledge Hulu’s losses to their investors, they also make hundreds of millions of dollars a year licensing their TV shows to Hulu. On the other hand, Hulu’s owners - Disney, 21st Century Fox, Comcast** and AT&T - don’t seem to care about Hulu’s cash burn. Cutting prices on its most popular service won’t help Hulu improve its losses, which went way over $1 billion in 2018.Hulu is cutting the price of its most popular subscription service* at the same time that rival Netflix is introducing a price hike. The why is more interesting, though it requires an occasional dash of speculation: And it is keeping the price of its ad-free version of its basic service at $12 a month. Save over 11/month compared to the current regular monthly price of each service when purchased separately. Hulu is also raising the price of its live TV service, which offers a cable-TV-like package of channels, from $40 a month to $45. Available with Hulu (With Ads) for 12.99/month or with Hulu (No Ads) for 19.99/month. Hulu is cutting the price of its original subscription service, which lets you watch TV shows that have already run on traditional TV networks, as well as movies and some original programming, from $8 a month to $6. Hulu offers a variety of subscription plans, including an ad-supported one for students for 1.99 per month as well as one without ads for a monthly fee of 12.99. Hulu is also raising the price of its video streaming service. Hulu is cutting the price of its video streaming service. However, language standardisation is, more often than not, the preferred method employed by a translator. Rather than speaking in the standardised American-English of the time, the characters in Twain’s novel speak in numerous different dialects with varying comical and political implications. Literature and translation lecturer BJ Epstein has produced work on the translation of dialects, in Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Unless a translator is able to render such regionalism in translation, the resulting text has hardly the same cultural value.Īccents and dialects can similarly be used to portray a character’s social standing, but these are ultimately phonetic devices, and prove difficult to handle in translation. One way or another, prose style in Italy constitutes a gesture of allegiance and belonging, whether to an elite, a youth culture, an ideology, or a class. Indeed, the only absolutely neutral and hypercorrect Italian is to be found in translated fiction. Poetry in local dialects continues to flourish in Italy, together with novels that, like those of the Sicilian detective-story writer Andrea Camilleri, are dense with local idiom and phraseology. How do we handle regional and dialectical writing? Translators tried to smooth her language, to correct odd punctuation and weird phrasings, but it does her a disservice: if you take out the weirdness of Lispector, then you take out Lispector. When Barbara Epler of US publisher New Directions discusses the art of publishing, she lamented the house’s first attempts to translate the works of Portuguese author Clarice Lispector: “The portuguese of Lispector is broken… and we’d created something neat, and not at all the same…”. If there’s danger in too much of the translator’s own creative energies present in revised works, there’s also a danger of a translator stripping original texts of their grammatical style. And the passage in which Mme Bovary decides to kill herself is 80% longer in Hopkins’ version, which cannot help but modify interpretation of the scene. For example, in giving the philanderer Rodolphe more florid and poetic language in his dialogues with Emma, Hopkins makes him “play the part of a different sort of lover” altogether. He argued that Hopkins’s translation changes the interpretation of characters. His findings showed that Gerard Hopkins’ translation of Gustave Flaubert’s Mme Bovary regularly uses both explicitation and addition. Does hypercorrection render translated text misrepresentative?Ī translator’s creativity and originality can sometimes represent a threat to the integrity of a literary text, argued Professor Lance Hewson at an event with UCL’s Centre for Translation Studies. Here we take a look at some popular literary translations to consider if and when hypercorrection of language is appropriate. If your fingers are too heavy or too light, the piece can be distorted. Like a musical composition, the ‘performance’ is an interpretation. These changes seem small, but they are essential. Translators, therefore, must interpret language idiom, dialect, metaphor and connotation, which can mean modifying content too. It’s known as the theory of ‘sense-for-sense’ translation. The role of the translator isn’t simply to recreate a text word-for-word, but to accurately convey the same meaning in a different cultural context. |
